I’ll be at the 2011 Happy Camp, CA Bigfoot Jamboree
This year’s Happy Camp Bigfoot Jamboree will take place on Labor Day Weekend, September 2-4, 2011 at the River Park in Happy Camp. Our resident Bigfoot researcher, JavaBob Schmalzbach, will be a speaker – as will I. You can see us at 1pm on Saturday 9/3/11 at the pavilion in River Park. I have NEVER spoken at a Bigfoot event (honestly, I don’t even attend the conferences, as of yet) but since the Bigfoot Jamboree is a gathering of Happy Camp neighbors I will gather together some brave thoughts, psyche myself up, and go tell everyone why I’ve been researching Bigfoot for the last six years.

My main motivation for doing this is to let people in our area know that Bigfoot is a real phenomena, not just an awesome statue in the middle of town. I want to tell them about Bigfoot sightings in our area.
When I got here in 2000, nobody talked about sightings. In April 2001 we had a town celebration for the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the Bigfoot Scenic Byway which runs from Happy Camp to Willow Creek. At our celebration one speaker mentioned a Bigfoot sighting that had taken place about ten miles from here in the 1800s. Other than that, nobody could tell us anything about local Bigfoot sightings.
My goal, therefore, was to find out if Happy Camp has a real claim to the presence of Bigfoot, and that’s what I’ll be speaking about at the Bigfoot Jamboree. It will be an opportunity to share my findings with the people of our town.
After I’m done, I’ll turn the stage over to JavaBob, a more experienced speaker with a book to sell. I’m not sure what he has planned but I’m sure it will be of interest to anyone who has wondered about the existence of Bigfoot.
I asked Tara Hauki to speak and she declined. I get the impression she’s received some negative feedback from some of her friends and acquaintances in town, and feels a need for more privacy. We have discussed sponsoring an event more centric to the Bigfoot community at which we might get her to take part.
There may be other Bigfoot researchers in town that week that could take the stage for a bit… and if you are such a person who can be in Happy Camp that weekend, please email me – let me know. Bigfoot DNA – Proof Within Controversy
As the results of the Bigfoot DNA studies slowly emerge from the silence of Dr. Melba Ketchum’s lab, it is both exciting to hear about the discoveries, and distressing to realize there’s so much in-fighting and bickering going on. As usual, in Bigfoot research, every ego is on edge and some go over the edge.
I first heard of it from my neighbor, JavaBob Schmalzbach, author of Monsters, Myths, and Me and owner of the Footprints in Your Mind website. He was involved with Richard Stubstad and Dr. Melba Ketchum when the project started. However as it progressed and the non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) expired, communication within the team broke down. It seems that Ketchum has taken over the evidence and edged others out of the deal.
Consequently, Richard Stubstad recently published a statement about the results of the DNA research, after refusing to sign a new NDA giving Dr. Ketchum 100% of the glory and joy of the new discovery. It appears that her attempt to cut out her former associates has backfired.
This appears to be a typical Bigfoot research scenario. I don’t know what it is about Bigfoot, but researchers have been vying with one another for the glory of the great discovery for decades now. I tend to think it is a matter of motivation. When we’re caught up in the human drama rather than thinking first of the well-being of the Bigfoot people themselves, competition runs rampant. So many people want to be the owner of the name that goes down in history as the person who proved the existence of Bigfoot!
Richard Stubstad’s article about Bigfoot DNA can be found in the July 2011 issue of JavaBob’s online magazine: Footprints in Your Mind – Special Sasquatch Edition. It is also on his website.
According to his biography on Footprints In Your Mind.Com, Richard Stubstad started his Bigfoot research as recently as 2009. Since then he “initiated the mitochondrial sequencing of several purported sasquatch samples through Dr. Ketchum’s DNA diagnostics laboratory in Texas.”
The information he is revealing now is not a “leak” of someone else’s work, but rather is from Richard Stubstad’s own collection of evidence and work on the DNA project prior to being shut out. For more information see this rebutal found on JavaBob’s website. He believes he has a legal right to share this much with the public.
Quoting Richard Stubstad:
1) This wasn’t intended to be a leak. Since I am no longer working with Dr. Ketchum according to her own personal desires, I am simply reporting on the work I did, without assistance, on the mtDNA analysis of the first two unspecified mtDNA samples.
2) Dr. K is incorrect; I’m not at all “misinformed” about her ongoing DNA work on various purported sasquatch samples; I’m not informed whatsoever, much beyond what I have already stated.
3) What I stated was not the result of Dr. K’s own work; she merely provided the mtDNA sequencing that others (who provided samples) had paid for. I also paid for some of the testing involved out of my own pocket.
4) Dr. K did not initially notice the close connection between Samples 1 and 2; I did the statistical analysis and told her, quite openly, of the statistical results since we and several others were intimately involved in this exciting and cooperative research when it started.
5) Within a short period of time, she excluded me from what quickly turned into “her” project, along with several others. She told me that her lawyer(s) told her to do so. This does resemble the smell of blood, eh?
The two original samples submitted to the lab were from totally separate sources. In fact, the researcher offering sample #1 did not see eye-to-eye with the researcher offering sample #2, so there was no opportunity for cross-contamination. Nevertheless these two samples had strikingly similar DNA characteristics, enough so that Stubstad concluded that there is a 97-98% certainty that Bigfoot exists.
The mtDNA tests of both samples offered clues to the mitochondrial (maternal/female) origins, showing them to be 100% HUMAN (homo sapiens) proving that “Bigfoot People” is a reasonable term… just as many recent research reports have suggested. They are our cousins, and a likely possibility is that they resulted from breeding between something else, and humans of our species.
What is known about the “Mitochondrial Eve” for both the original samples, is that she was from the “Franco-Cantabrian glacial refuge”. She was a homo sapiens human being living in southern Europe 15,000 years ago, give or take about 5000 years.

New Erickson Project News: Bigfoot DNA Project Using Two Dead Bigfoot Bodies for Samples
Bear Hunter Interview – Part 2
Interview with Richard Stubstad – Is Bigfoot Human?
The issue of two dead Bigfoot . . . is something I can’t totally believe at this time, but I will explain it to you. The story is that a hunter in Plumas County, CA was threatened by a female Bigfoot, old enough to have gray hair. She was, according to him, blocking the road and making gestures that made him feel threatened, so he got out of his vehicle and shot her.
Then he says there were two young Sasquatches in the forest nearby, obviously upset by the female’s death. The hunter is reported to have shot and killed one of them.
The story continues that there were two other hunters with him. One became hysterical and they took away the rifle and wouldn’t let him shoot the third Bigfoot.
According to the web-rumors, the hunter is extremely worried about being prosecuted, and well he should be. California law is detailed and specific about what hunters are allowed to shoot. Bigfoot, of course, is not on that list.
Also, since the DNA is proving that Sasquatches are at least 1/2 human, there could be murder charges.
One rumor states that they left the bodies there. Another states that the bodies were recovered and sent to a Bigfoot research project in Washington state. And there’s the rumor that a piece of flesh from the female’s thigh was sent to Dr. Melba Ketchum for DNA analysis.
So, there’s the story of two dead Bigfoot bodies. I’m waiting for proof before I’ll believe any of it.

[Update: Another radio broadcast - 7/9/11 - Robert Lindsay interviewed by the Minnesota Bigfoot Research Team, with a call-in from BFRO researcher Derek Randles, who spoke with the shooter of the 2 Plumas County Bigfoot and tends to believe the story. (I'm still reserving judgement on the story because it reminds me of the Georgia Bigfoot Hoax, the Stagecoach Nevada Bigfoot Hoax, etc. etc.... show me the proof!!!)]

Sierra Sasquatch – on Monster Quest, March 17
Apparently there’s a new film? More footprints to examine? Some frightened witnesses?
Am I the only Bigfoot researcher in the world who has never seen an episode of Monster Quest? (No TV connection!)
Here’s the announcement from the History.Com website:
Sierra Sasquatch
Premiere Date: 03/17/2010
Ancient petroglyphs in the Sierra Nevada Mountains depict footprints left by frightening packs of hairy man-like beasts. Now, MonsterQuest heads to the heart of California where witnesses are encountering aggressively territorial packs of Sasquatch. The team will investigate groups of large footprints found here and analyze compelling new video which could be that of the beast.
Their show listings: Monster Quest … hmmm – I see they have full episodes online so I can go there in a few days to see this one!
Now normally I could have just linked you to that page but I wanted to comment on what they said in their blurb…
1. “…witnesses are encountering aggressively territorial packs of Sasquatch…” – assuming this is true, can you blame a Sasquatch for being upset about human beings encroaching on his territory? I always think of the Bigfoot shaking the trees on the border of Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties when he found people camping out on his ridge that led to the ocean. That’s in David Paulides’ book, Tribal Bigfoot – but I mentioned it here: Santa Cruz County Bigfoot. These poor creatures are constantly being pushed back further into the wilderness as human beings take over forested areas. We cannot count on all Bigfoot people to take it calmly. I’m sure they have many variations in character just as human beings do. Some are calm, some excitable, and some oppressive!
2. “…analyze compelling new video which could be that of the beast.” – Hmmm. The beast? I’m totally getting away from the concept of a Sasquatch as a beast, animal, or creature. Of those three words I like ‘creature’ best but for now, I’m going with “Bigfoot” or “Bigfoot people” or something like that. Sure, they live in the woods like animals, so far as we know, but I prefer to think of them as an intelligent tribe of people living in primitive conditions. They’ve learned to avoid human beings because when the white settlers came here they brought rifles and were seen to use them. Before that they came close to the native villages and there wasn’t such a huge divide between “them” and “us” as there is now. The natives were aware of them; they didn’t question their existence. But if they were truly “beasts” we’d be hearing about people being killed by Bigfoot, as they obviously have the greater strength, and we don’t hear that, do we?

Do Bigfoot People Research Human People?

Bigfoot people will protect their families.
I’ll bet they sure do…
In fact, I’m guessing that a lot of our sightings happen when curious Sasquatches come into our territory to see what we’re up to.
A good example is Dr. Matthew Johnson’s sighting at Oregon Caves. He and his family were innocently walking on a trail behind the caves when a Bigfoot started tracking them, while standing behind trees for concealment. The only reason he was seen was that Dr. Johnson climbed the hill. Because he was off the trail in a place the Bigfoot didn’t expect him to be, he got a glimpse of the Sasquatch looking down at his family.
According to Dr. Johnson’s report, this Bigfoot was keeping an eye on passing humans – possibly as a protection for his family or tribe.
I live in the Klamath River valley near a small town, Happy Camp, that is surrounded by hills. Every hill is covered with trees. There is plenty of space for ridge-walking Bigfoot people to look down at the town and keep an eye on our activities. There is no need to wonder what their motivations might be.
For the last two centuries European-Americans have encroached on Bigfoot territory here in the US Western states. Old newspaper accounts place Bigfoot people living in the areas of Central California and even the San Francisco Bay Area. These Bigfoot habitation areas have, for a long time, been taken over and settled in by humans, and our modern civilization has no doubt caused many thousands of Bigfoot people to have to resettle into more remote locations.
Do they communicate with one another? You betcha! There have been sightings of Bigfoot people chattering away at one another. Even without those reports it is common sense. All species of animals can communicate with their kind. Ever seen a flock of birds all change direction together at one simultaneous instant?
Recently a new site, BigfootHub.Com, posted a fascinating report of a Bigfoot who spoke English. Is this so hard to believe? If Bigfoot people are hyper-intelligent (and they must be, to avoid humans so well,) surely they have brain power enough to learn our language.
And surely they have brain power enough to watch our activities and … research us!

Bigfoot Blogsearch
A few days ago I went to Google Blogsearch and put “bigfoot” in the searchbox at the top of the page… and was excited to see a link to my blog at the top of the results page! A link to one of Linda Newton-Perry’s articles was not far beneath that.
It amazes me that this blog is getting as much traffic as it does. I’m deeply grateful, especially since I know there are other Bigfoot blogs that deserve a lot more recognition. I’d like to share my blog traffic by redirecting you to some very worthy bloggers.
1. Cliff Barackman’s blog – Cliff is in Oregon
2. Bigfoot’s Blog – Steven Streufert in Willow Creek, California
3. Autumn Williams – also in Oregon
4. Blogsquatcher – I loved hearing him on Blog Talk Radio…
5. Stan Courtney – he always seems to have something new and worth reading.
6. Bigfoot Times – Daniel Perez
7. Bigfoot Field Reporter – Sharon Lee
There are some great Sasquatch bloggers out there on the internet! [I will be adding to this list.]
You’re welcome to place your Bigfoot blog link in the comment section here. I know I haven’t mentioned all the good ones, and I’ll appreciate any heads-up links to Bigfoot blogs I don’t know about yet.
